Prior to this election, the Radicals held one of the seats and the Whigs held the other seat. At this election, the Conservatives gained one seat from the Radicals and gained the other seat from the Whigs.
James Douglas Stoddart Douglas and WIlliam Bodkin were elected as the members of parliament for Rochester.
