An election was held in Rochester and Chatham on 10 October 1974 to elect a member of parliament for the constituency.

The Conservatives won the previous election in 1974 with a majority of 843. At this election, Labour gained the seat from the Conservatives with a majority of 3,418.

Robert Bean was elected as the member of parliament for Rochester and Chatham.
