A by-election was held in Gillingham South ward on 19 February 1998 to elect one councillor.

Prior to the by-election, the seat was held by the Liberal Democrats. Following the by-election, the Liberal Democrats held the seat.

Dayantha Porambe Liyanage was elected as councillor for the ward.
