Kent County Council Election

1 May 1997

No Medway Candidates

An election to Kent county council was held on 1 May 1997 for all electoral divisions outside of Medway.

However, as the legislation creating Medway council and removing the area from Kent county council had already been passed and elections held on the same day for the future unitary authority, no elections were held in Medway for the county council.

Instead, under article 12 of the Kent (Borough of Gillingham and City of Rochester upon Medway) (Structural Change) Order 1996, the 15 county councillors in Medway had their terms of office extended for the final ten months that Medway was served by Kent county council.

The composition graphic below therefore includes those 15 councillors together with the 84 who had been newly elected elsewhere in Kent on 1 May 1997.
