An election was held in Rochester and Chatham on 3 May 1979 to elect a member of parliament for the constituency.

Labour won the previous election in 1974 with a majority of 3,418. At this election, the Conservatives gained the seat from Labour with a majority of 2,688.

Peggy Fenner was elected as the member of parliament for Rochester and Chatham.
