The area development control east committee had responsibility for determining planning applications, planning and building control enforcement and issues relating to tree preservation orders for east Medway until April 2004.

The area development control east committee had responsibility for the following council wards: Chatham Central, Gillingham North, Gillingham South, Hempstead and Wigmore, Lordswood and Capstone, Luton and Wayfield, Princes Park, Rainham Central, Rainham North, Rainham South, Twydall, Walderslade and Watling.

This responsibility passed to the development control committee in May 2004.
