Arthur Bottomley
Baron Bottomley of Middlesbrough
The Rt Hon. Arthur Bottomley OBE PC is a former Labour member of parliament for Rochester and Chatham. He represented the constituency between February 1950 and September 1959.
In January 1984, he was given a life peerage as Baron Bottomley of Middlesbrough and entered the House of Lords as a Labour peer. He remained in the House of Lords until November 1995.
During his time in parliament, Lord Bottomley served as minister of overseas development, secretary of state for commonwealth relations, parliamentary under-secretary of state for dominion affairs, and secretary for overseas trade.
Lord Bottomley has stood in five elections in Medway. He has been elected on four occasions.
