Elections to the European Parliament
The European parliament is the directly-elected parliamentary institution of the European Union. Voters in the UK elected members of the European parliament between its formation as an elected assembly in July 1979 and the UK's departure from the European Union in January 2020.
Between 1979 and 1999, Medway and its predecessor boroughs formed part of the single-member Kent West constituency. These elections took place place using the first past the post electoral system (FPTP). Under FPTP, every voter has one vote and the candidate with the highest number of votes is elected.
From 1999 until 2020, Medway formed part of the multi-member South East England constituency. These elections took place using party list proportional representation (list-PR). Under list-PR, every party presents a single list of candidates and every voter has one vote for their preferred party. The seats available are divded between the parties according to the number of votes they have received using the D'Hondt method. Individual candidates are elected in the order they appear on their party's list.
