Liberal Democrat Councillors

The Liberal Democrats are a national political party who were formed in 1988, when the Liberal party merged with the Social Democratic party.

The party saw their biggest electoral success in Medway in the 1990s. On Gillingham borough council, they grew from 12 councillors in 1988 to 30 councillors in 1996. They became the largest party on the council in 1992 and had a majority on the council from 1995 until the council merged with Rochester-upon-Medway city council in 1998. On the city council, they had six councillors in 1988, rising to eight in 1991. Their number of councillors then fell to five in 1995, although they became the second-largest party when the Conservatives were left with a single councillor.

When Medway council was formed in 1998, the Liberal Democrats were the second-largest party with 21 councillors. However, their membership on the council fell in four out of the following five elections and their three remaining councillors lost their seats in 2015.

There are currently no Liberal Democrat councillors on Medway council. However, since 1998 there have been 39 individuals who have sat as Liberal Democrat councillors but who are either no longer members of the council or now sit as members of another party.

All dates shown reflect unbroken terms of office as Liberal Democrat members.
